I was just corresponding with H. who is in, or from, Germany. His email triggered some thoughts I’ll share here …
re: singing bowl – many people have noticed the resemblance of my product N.O.W. to singing bowls (I’ve owned many of them for 40 years).
I would say there is in an intentional difference between N.O.W. and singing bowls. I have intentionally restricted the timbre palette, the pitch range and the pitch intervals in N.O.W. while simultaneously reducing noise (no scraping of the wooden / leather rod), and creating a random interplay between left and right speakers to generate spatial movement.
I’ve intentionally created these “simplifications” of the singing bowl sound because I’m trying to deliver an essentially “Right Relationship” experience through very pure simple sounds, very precise tuning and exact pitch intervals (I’ll have A LOT more to say about this in future blog posts).
Of course a singing bowl is a wonderful haptic experience with a lovely, physically meditative circular motion when it’s being activated. So I’m not dissing the bowls ; )
re: German connection – In January and April of 2015 I experience two significant Sartori moments with German connections that set me on this current path.
In January I was profoundly affected by Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now” after having owned it for years and never having read it. My egoic mind was so dismissive: “Oh, I get it, Eckhart Tolle, he’s one of these ‘be here now’ guys. Check, I got it, don’t need to read that stuff”.
But in January of 2015 in the midst of a profound psychological and physical health crisis I pick up the book again and was stunned. It was like Eckhart was speaking directly to me. Of course it was the message of consciousness, delivered by ET, speaking to the consciousness that I AM. duh.
The second Sartori moment, in April, occurred in Frankfurt near the cathedral. After attending the Frankfurt MusikMesse trade show I was sitting having coffee at a cafe on a cloudy day. The cathedral bells rang for a very long time, maybe 10 minutes. I was simply sitting, sipping and listening, not thinking.
Eventually the bells began to stop, one after another until there where just two bells slowly ringing, then one, then … no bells.
I followed the fade of the bell tones into the ambient sounds of the street. I noticed I was “aware of being aware”. This was triggered by my heightened sonic awareness of bell tone fade, voices (heard as sound-only as I don’t speak or understand much German) footsteps, auto traffic.
The clouds parted and the sun shone down. I felt as if my “state of grace batteries” had been instantly charged (that is how I later described the experience).
As a comfortably lapsed Roman Catholic I’m aware of a lovely term – “Signal Grace”. A signal grace is an objective signpost acknowledging one is traveling in the right direction, but it also experienced at the heart level as a “state of Grace”. Synchronistic occurrences, “chance” meetings, the appearance of “witnesses” etc. are other examples of Signal Graces.
Ever since that day in Frankfurt I’ve been on a different, wondrous and joyous path. Last February I moved to the island of Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Cape Cod and am living with my partner Alene in her childhood home on the family property in the woods with sheep, cows, goats and fields around us.
As soon as I got to Martha’s Vineyard I started writing about sound and consciousness. I wrote 70,000 words intended as a book of essays. The book was set aside temporarily as I turned my attention to developing a mobile app. The app was put aside temporarily as I turned my attention to developing a hardware product.
Many iterations and name changes later, this product is N.O.W.
My Frankfurt cathedral sound experience was the “accelerant” to the spark generated by Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now”. So yeah, I have a special place in my heart for some German influences that helped bring me to N.O.W.
