We often think of memory devices as tools that help us commit new information to memory. Mnemonic phrases, limericks, acronyms etc. all stand in for what is to be remembered in the future.
An example is the little poem “Thirty days hath September, April, June and November … “ used to help us remember how many days there are in each month. An old trick used to help one remember the name of a person is to make up a little phrase based on that person’s name –– her name is “Alene, pronounced like a lean-to tent”
N.O.W. is a type of memory device, one not used to commit new information to memory, but rather to remember realities that have been forgotten. N.O.W. helps your essential self remember what has been forgotten during its sleep, as consciousness became identified with the forms of the world.
What is forgotten as consciousness sleeps, identified with the thought forms the egoic mind thinks?
What is forgotten is I AM, the awareness that one is consciousness, not merely that you are a … (fill in the blank, with your job description or societal role). What is forgotten is the reality that you are the same primordial, loving intelligence that made, and still is making, the universe manifest into forms. What is forgotten as consciousness sleeps, identified with form, is that those forms emerge from formless stillness, and that your essential identity is eternal, formless stillness as well.
N.O.W. helps you awaken from the slumber of conscioiusness-identified-with-form and thus allows a clearer remembering of your essential nature to be perceived. And as this begins to occur more frequently in the days of your life, more frequently do external signs appears to show you that your remembering is revealing a world changed.
Consciousness awakening is simply an awareness, in the present moment, that You Are. We could say “you are aware that you are”. In other words, an awakened consciousness is aware that it is aware of sense perceptions, thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations. An awakened consciousness is that which knows it is a perceiving intelligence –– that which knows IT IS, distinct from what is perceived.
The perceiving intelligence that we are does not require time to perceive, nor does it require an object to perceive –– though recognition of objects via sensory perception is useful because sensory perception is just one step removed from being “aware that you are aware” (I am aware of the sensory perception of feeling this keyboard clicking under my fingers).
A N.O.W. New Origin Waveform tone sequence unfolds moment-by-moment, always different, always new each time N.O.W. is used. N.O.W. is a succession of present moments, N.O.W. exists outside of time as any particular tonal moment being heard, now, has never been heard before, nor will this particular tonal moment ever be heard again. N.O.W. is somewhat familiar each time it is used (and thus teaches that the present moment can comforting and comfortable) but always different as well (and teaches life is a never ending unfolding and progression of moments) and thus endlessly fascinating and alluring.
N.O.W. makes the present moment easier to recognize and inhabit than normal walking-around-in-the-world-thinking past-focused or future-focused thoughts. As a result, your essential self (consciousness) freed from thought, can then experience the reality of I AM awareness. This is the remembering of I AM.
And what happens when one increasingly awakens to I AM awareness? One begins to see serendipitous signs in the world that show you the world is changing. Here’s a little story about my most recent signage appearance.
While I live on, and manly write from West Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard, I have a boutique microphone business on Cape Cod in Hyannis, MA where I design and modify recording studio mics for clients across the US and around the world. I travel to Hyannis weekly and stay there for one or two nights in my beloved motorhome Presence so I can tend to business in my microphone workshop.
After waking early in the morning, getting dressed and making a strong Bialetti-brewed Peats French Roast espresso, Presence and I go out for a nice “driving meditation” along rural and scenic old Route 6a. We may drive west to Sandy Neck and park amongst the dunes near the waters of Cape Cod Bay or further west to the Cape Cod Canal where I can watch the inflowing and outflowing waters crash into each other as they meet in the canal. Or we may travel south to Craigville Beach on Nantucket Sound where I can get a good long walk on that smooth and sandy south-facing shore.
Yesterday, after leaving Sandy Neck to drive back east to my shop I decided to stay on Route 6a and go all the way into Barnstable Village to pick up a breakfast sandwich and take it back to the shop. Normally I’d veer off of 6a and drive the last mile on the more direct road to my shop – route 132, “Iyannough Road”.
See? Something gave me the idea to change my routine.
As the young woman at the counter rang up my order, she looked me over and said “What are you doing today?”. She was responding to the visage of my form draped in two shop coats (herringbone over navy blue) with a black flattened derby on my head –– a style of clothing that is a bit anachronistic and does not lend one to being easily identified as a “_______”, or “_______” (insert job title).
I replied that I was going to be building some microphones. She said:
“OMG, do you know J ___?”.
“Yes, he used to work for me”.
“I knew it!. Do you do something with mindfulness too?“
“Yes, I have a new hardware-based mindfulness aid called “N.O.W.”.
“Wow, is it good for kids? I’m leading a 6 week yoga and mindfulness program for kids this summer on the Cape”.
“N.O.W. is great for kids, all they have to do is listen for 3 minutes –– no dogma, no words, just pleasant sound that pulls their attention to the present moment”.
“Great! I’ll check it out and get back to you. I may want to use N.O.W. in my program“.
This serendipitous conversation was just the latest in an ongoing string of witness appearances, signposts, Signal Graces … that serve to show me the world is changing as I increasingly remember my essential identity –– consciousness.
Try remembering your essential, I AM, identity and see the world change around you.
