At the conclusion of another insightful conversation with my partner Alene the image of a witch and broomstick came to me. It seems cleaning is in the air, out with the old and in with new!
I have to begin by saying I don’t know the first thing about wicca thought / non-thought and practices. In fact, I don’t know much more about “witches” than how powerful and insightful women have been portrayed and persecuted down through the ages. So please excuse my ignorance as I write from intuition.
When the image of a witch riding a broomstick came to me last night it really got my attention. Wtf? Really such a simple yet powerful image. Stripped down to the basics –– a woman straddling a cleaning tool as they both defy gravity and go about their “clean-sweep” adventures, apparently satisfied without the help of any man, thank you very much. lol.
It occurred to me that the male egoic mind has made strong, intuitive women into objects of scorn because these women, with their incomprehensible intuitive ways are capable of sweeping away the chaotic messiness of egoic thought –– the rules and thoughts patterns made by men in an attempt solidify their own ego’s insubstantial existence.
The metaphor of a woman, paired with a broom, who together can sweep away the detritus of egoic thought is delightful to me. I often say that the solution to life’s challenges, and strife of any kind really, does not come from better thoughts –– conflict resolution comes from the state of no-thought. The state that is left when thinking has been swept from the mind and the pleasure of being, remains.
N.O.W., as a “product” (it is more than a product, more on this another time) invented in New England, on an island with an uncommonly high level of spiritual energy, has some similarity to a witch riding her broom.
N.O.W. proceeds with a good deal of Yin, “feminine”, open-receptivity / resonant energy. I’m not going to attempt to analyze its Yin / Yang balance, but I have a hunch it is perfectly and dynamically balanced in this regard. And because it is so balanced, it already exudes far more Yin / feminine principle energy than is normally encountered in the male egoic-expansive world.
At its most elemental, N.O.W. asks you to “Just Listen” (to receive). You don’t have to know how it works (though I love to write about how it works as N.O.W. is a richly rewarding object of study). Just listen and observe the results of your listening.
“Just listening”, without messy egoic thinking getting in the way, is a purely receptive, Yin, experience. Just listen, observe the Truth in Being as all that chaotic thought is swept away.
The witch has been derided for centuries because men instinctively knew of the power of intuitive receptivity –– but their egoic minds rejected this power, because to embrace this reality means the death of the ego. And the ego-possessed finds this to be intolerable because they know not of the life beyond egoic thought.
When egoic thought is swept away (and remember, the image of the witch on her broom slyly invites us to recognize the pleasure that remains) one can become aware of these insights:
You are the author of what you see, the feelings you would experience and the meaning you give to perceptions. You can decide in advance on the goals to realize. Everything that appears to occur in your life is as you decide it is –– its only meaning supplied by you.
